13th Contemporary Drama Festival Budapest

2-10 December 2016

Tranquility - a production of the Tompa Miklós Ensemble at the Targu Mures National Theatre directed by Radu Afrim, which has won the prize for Best Performance awarded by the Hungarian theatre critics - will be shown in Budapest for the first time.

The Contemporary Drama Festival will be held for the 13th time in December 2016, organised by SzínMűHely Foundation and Creatív Média Literary Agency. The aim of the Festival is to support contemporary drama, to make it more popular, but first of all to make the activities of the scene better known both by the Hungarian public and the international theatre professionals. One of the missions of the international festival initiated by civilians is to offer a Visitors’ Programme for foreign professionals. It is a Hungarian Theatre Showcase Programme which contains performances subtitled in English by traditional public theatre companies, independent, Budapest based or from the country side as well as of some from beyond the borders of the country. This program aims to be one of the most important facilitators in making Hungarian theatre better known internationally.

Young theatre-makers in the focus

The festival has always put great emphasis on presenting young professionals in the foreground but this year they will be the protagonists. According to the basic concept, the young generations will be given opportunities to present themselves in all of the programmes, in the showcase and the accompanying events as well. The main idea is to try and present an overall image of the multi-colored nature of the contemporary Hungarian theatre both in the conceptual and aesthetic sense. The professional jury (the members are: literary manager Ildikó Lőkös, playwright Ákos Németh, theatre critic and editor-in-chief of the theatre periodical Játszótér Anikó Varga, literary manager Bence Bíró, theatre critic and publicist of Index Bálint Kovács, theatre critic and editor of Revizor Panni Puskás) have made their selection of the most outstanding theatre performances of the 2015/16 season, paying special attention to new Hungarian plays and innovative theater aesthetics. One of the most important aspects of the selection has been to make sure that the performances reflect on the present in a progressive way.
